Taking bitewing x-rays to detect caries in recall patients is a standard of care however if there are third molars present, it has its significant downside particularly if those third molars are impacted.
I present here a case of a gentleman who came for periodontal treatment due to pocketing of 5+ mm. in his maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth. The Bitewings shown were taken 10/8/13.
The excisional biopsy is in the process of being done.
This points out however the need for patients to receive periapical films if not periodic panoramic views especially when third molars are present.
In the attempt to reduce radiation, we can run the risk of missing important diagnostic information.
